The ever compassionate Lord, though being form-less and attribute-less, takes a form and a name for the benefit of the devotees. A shivalinga is said to be one of the best representations of the Lord, combining his manifest and unmanifest representations and its worship is said to bestow great spiritual and material benefits to devotees that cannot be obtained otherwise.
The swayambhu ( self-manifest ) shiva lingas formed on the bed of the sacred Narmada river are said to be the best of the best Shiva Lingas that can be worshipped as the Lord’s presence is said to be permanently present in them. Worship of one of these Lingas is capable of removing sins accumulated in many lifetimes.
